Meet the Chairman

Welcome to Guild

I am Sam Culhane (Ashworth) and I am the Guild Chairman. I was at College from 1977 to 1984 in Farnley Lodge and Elizabeth. Afterwards I went to Bristol University to read law, becoming a management consultant before moving into Investor Relations. I then took six years out of paid employment to bring up four daughters, two of whom went to CLC - Maddie (2015) and Imi (2019). A midlife crisis prompted me to return to university to become a midwife, qualifying in 2014.

Although Miss Adams would be disappointed if the results ever fell from their extremely high level, an education at College is so much more than an exam fest! It is this extended education which it is so important for us to harness for the benefit of Guild members, College in general and the wider community.  Watching a recent Leavers’ video, I was once again struck by the intelligence, drive and compassion of CLC girls and their determination to succeed, not only on their own account but for the greater good of the community.

I feel very strongly that in many areas Guild can play a larger role in the lives of its members:- socially, through in-person meetings but also through the newly-launched CLC Connect as well as our webinars and podcasts.  We can also offer advice on universities and careers, providing contacts and work experience as well as supporting community enterprises.

I am particularly keen to increase engagement with recent leavers and provide even better communication with all of our 8,500 members.  We are always looking for people to join the Guild Executive Committee or to become involved in more specific areas of Guild. If you are interested, please do get in touch with me via the contact form.
