Dorothea Beale Centenary Debate 2007

Saturday 8 December

CLC vs GUILD

On a wet and windy December morning College was delighted to host the 2007 Dorothea Beale Debate. The morning consisted of two debates which were argued by a Guild team and a CLC team. The motions were “This house would tighten immigration laws” (Proposition Guild: Prabha Rathinasabapathy and Isabel Summers; Opposition CLC: Claire Brand and Alex Walvis) and “This house would hold parents accountable for the actions of their children” (Proposition CLC: Lauren Daum and Rachel Sullivan; Opposition Guild: Izzy Poston and Caroline Dobbin).

The teams had put an enormous amount of time and preparation into their arguments, and gave convincing and enthusiastic arguments for their side. Both debates were followed by lively floor debates with lots of interesting comments and points raised.

The three judges – Mrs Maggie Henderson-Tew, Mr Mark Coote and Mr John Clarke had the un-enviable task of deliberating and selecting the 2007 winners, and it was decided that the trophy should go to the 2006 winners Claire Brand and Alex Walvis. Mark Coote took to the stage and thanked the speakers before presenting the winning team with their trophy.

We should like to thank all those involved with the event, particularly the speakers for their thought-provoking arguments and participation, and the judges for kindly giving their time on a weekend.
